A third of all divorce filings in 2011 contained the word "Facebook," according to Divorce Online. And more than 80 percent of U.S. divorce attorneys say social networking in divorce proceedings is on the rise, according to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

According to that survey, approximately one in three divorces resulted from social media-related disagreements.

Social media and infidelity

 Eight percent of adults in relationships admit to having secret accounts. And one in three divorces now start as online affairs.

The most recent data we have from the 2019 American Community Survey puts the rate at 14.9 divorces per 1,000 marriages, the lowest number since 1970.

Every 13 seconds, there is one divorce in America. 12. That equates to 277 divorces per hour, 6,646 divorces per day, 46,523 divorces per week, and 2,419,196 divorces per year.

According to family law firm McKinley Irvin's new infographic, with one in three marriages ending because of an online affair, Facebook and Match.com are playing big rolls in the reason people divorce.
