A low-carb diet can shorten your lifespan.

A study published in The Lancet Public Health shows that people with a low-carb and a high-carb diet have a higher death rate.

What causes a low-carb diet to shorten life expectancy is a lower intake of fruits and vegetables combined with a high intake of animal-based proteins and fats.

The findings of this study conclude that the lowest death rate comes from people who consume carbohydrates in moderation.

But if you still want to remove carbs from your diet, replace them with vegetables instead of meat.

Because vegetables have no cholesterol, unlike meat, and they have more fiber, that’s good for your digestive health.

To reach their conclusions, the authors pulled data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, which included more than 15,400 people ages 45 to 64. Participants completed a food frequency questionnaire at the start of the study and again six years later, reporting how often they consumed certain foods and drinks, as well as the serving sizes. Twenty-five years later, researchers analyzed their health information and determined who died. Next, researchers adjusted for factors including age, sex, race, total caloric intake, diabetes, cigarette smoking, physical activity, income, and education, and looked at the association between carbohydrate consumption and mortality.
