Fortune cookies are an American invention.

Like chop suey, fortune cookies are an American invention. They originated in California, but who the actual inventor was, and which city in California is the true home of the fortune cookie, has continued to be a matter of debate. Unequivocally not Chinese, the fortune cookie may in fact not even be Chinese American.

The fortune cookies were made by a San Francisco bakery, Benkyodo. David Jung, founder of the Hong Kong Noodle Company in Los Angeles, has made a competing claim that he invented the cookie in 1918. San Francisco's Court of Historical Review attempted to settle the dispute in 1983.

While it is technically a dessert served primarily in Chinese restaurants, the fortune cookie has a layered meaning beyond other confectionary due to its distinctive shape and its hidden paper slip inscribed with a fortune. The cookie symbolizes luck, fate, soundbite Chinese wisdom, and the mysteries of the unknown.
