Back when dinosaurs existed, there used to be volcanoes that were erupting on the moon.

The Moon. Due to the low viscosity of most lunar lava, volcanic mountains were seldom created. Instead, basaltic lava flooded large areas, which became lunar maria. Shield volcanoes are known from a few areas on the Moon; they are called lunar domes.

The moon, thought to be cold and dead, is still alive and kicking—barely. Scientists have found evidence for dozens of burps of volcanic activity, all within the past 100 million years—a mere blip on the geologic timescale. And they think that future eruptions are likely—although probably not within a human lifetime.

That's suggestive of a larger role for the volcanoes in the extinction: The eruptions could have injected massive amounts of greenhouse gases and particles into the atmosphere, changing Earth's climate in ways that stressed out late Cretaceous life.

Now small lava flows on moon's dark plains suggest activity as recently as 50 million years ago. Lunar scientists have long thought that dark outpourings of lava gave the man in the moon its characteristic face more than three billion years ago, and that the moon's volcanic activity halted a billion years ago

The use of a crewed vehicle on the Moon's surface was demonstrated in 1971 with the Lunar Roving Vehicle during Apollo 15. Apollo 16 made the first landing within the rugged lunar highlands. However, interest in further exploration of the Moon was beginning to wane among the American public.

Io is one of the four large moons of Jupiter, the largest planet. It is the most volcanically active world in the solar system. It is almost literally covered with active volcanoes
